Mint Gallery presents Black Mirror the most recent suite
of work by Dunedin painter Brendan Jon Philip.
As an ongoing investigation into the generation of meaning,
Brendan's practice explores alchemical allegory through narratives
of abstract painting. Mapping a dynamic space between darkness and
light, being and nothingness, meaning and entropy; these works
offer propose the self as an expression of non-signified
information. In a world where the only certainty is uncertainty
perhaps the truest image comes to us through a glass darkly.
Brendan Jon Philip is an artist, writer, and musician based in
Dunedin. Drawing these distinct practices into syncretic whole, he
has exhibited, published, and performed throughout New Zealand. He
has studied at Whitecliffe College of Art and Design and Elam
School of Fine Arts, as well as receiving distinction in Film and
Media Studies at the University of Otago.
